What else is new? Did we really think these guys were going to win anything in the post season? We wanted to believe, we wanted to think that this year was the year, but to tell you the truth before the first playoff game started at Wrigley this year I had a sinking feeling in my stomach that they were going to get swept in the first round. I said it before in my last post that these guys were a bunch of gutless, spineless, not hungry enough pretty boys that just went out there and gave us a big tease. These were not gritty men who hungered for a World Series win. In 2009 I don't want to see a bunch of goons walking around with "THIS IS THE YEAR" posters or "IT'S GONNA HAPPEN" signs. I don't want to hear Ryan Dempster talking about winning a World Series (especially when he can't find the strike zone in the playoffs). Nothing is going to happen. I will not be passionate anymore. I will not even get the least bit excited even if they were to win 162 games in the regular season. I will not be tricked again. Fool me once shame on you, fool me 100 plus times shame on me. They are baseball's perenial losers and until they get some guys who can want it as much as the fans do, there will never be a World Series Championship on the north side. Let's face it Cubs fans, THE CHICAGO CUBS and the words CHOKE and LOSERS are synonymous.

THE CURSE OF DUSTY

I was just thinking to myself this morning that since the Cubs are playing so poorly in this first round of the playoffs could there be some sort of reason other than that the Cubs just stink. I don't like to use curses as an excuse but as you all know in '45 there was the "goat", '69 there was the "black cat", '03 there was "Steve Bartman". Could the year '08 be the curse of "Dusty Baker"? I'm sure he didn't like the way he was sent out of town in 2006 only to find that when they hired Lou Piniella for '07 that they really opened up the purse strings which they never did for ol toothpick sucking Dusty. Now, I personally did not like Dusty and when it comes to regular season coaching I think Lou runs circles around Dusty, but does Lou go into a major senior moment when it comes to the playoffs? It looks like he is a Jr. High baseball coach compared with Joe Torre. Let's face it Cubs fans, as much as we did not like Dusty at the helm he did get us to within 5 outs of the World Series, something that Lou has not done yet. I wouldn't put it pass Dusty to hire a voodoo witch doctor just to put a hex on the Cubs because of how he was treated while he was here. Ok, come on now....I really don't believe in curses and I'm just messing with you all. The Cubs are just a bunch of nice guys...they have no killer instinct, no eye of the tiger. They are not scrappy, or grinders or anything that an opposing team would be afraid of. They are a bunch of guys who grandmothers love and think are polite mannered young men....nice guys..and we all know what happens to NICE GUYS!

CUBBIE CHOKE

How could they do this to us? They took us all they way to the dance and then they dumped us. The Chicago Cubs are an embarrassment to the city of Chicago, to their faithful fans and to MLB. You would think that getting swept by the Diamondbacks a year ago would still sting a little and that they would have come into this playoff series with the so called "eye of the tiger", but they did their usual Cubbie Choke and I for one have had enough of them. I wish every Cub fan would have left Wrigley after that atrocious 2nd inning. LEE!

SEPT 18, 2008

Today's game was pretty nerve racking to say the least. With the Cubs down 4 runs in the 9th, I had already thrown in the towel. I was just about to reach for my antacid pills as we were down runs and had two outs already when lo and behold Geovany Soto hits a 3 run game tying homer. Bless you Geo! What's even more amazing is that Derrek Lee hit a clutch single in the 12th inning to win the game. Let's face it, D. Lee has not been too clutch this season. He usually hits into double plays or strikes out. Hopefully he is coming out of some kind of funky slump. I sure hope so because we need him to come up to the plate with runners on and move them over and knock them in. All in all this was a great game. I would like to mention though that Kerry Wood has got to stop scaring the hell out of us and just get those damn batters out. Quit with the drama Kerry! OK, BRING ON THE REDBIRDS AND LET'S TRY TO WRAP THIS THING UP SOON.

P.S. I tried to post something when Zambrano got his No-Hitter but I lost it somehow and I didn't want to re-write it. Congrats to Big Z....you the man. Also, kudos to Theodore Roosevelt Lilly for following you the next day with a one hitter.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://99cubyears.blogspot.com/2008/09/well-its-about-damn-time-d-lee.html' title='WELL IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME D. That's good because if the Cubs don't play they can't lose. There is a lot of talk going around about how Cubs fans are climbing on top of tall buildings and are getting ready to leap. Well can you freakin' blame us? 100 years of being the "Door Mat Of The National League" and they expect us to be all calm and reserved when our team loses 2 out of 3 to toothpick sucking Dusty Baker's Reds. Has any other fan base gone this long without a championship or got so close only to blow it again and again and again and again? If you aren't concerned about Big Z's tendonitis or Rich Harden's glass arm then I think you are on some serious drugs. And what's up with Double Play Derrek Lee? You definitely don't want him up at bat in a clutch situation. Then there's Home Run Howry. I get the heebie jeebies when he comes out to pitch. Neal Cotts, not getting it done. Darryl Ward doesn't scare me when he comes up to bat, why would he scare opposing pitchers? I could go on and on. All I'm saying is if the Cubs don't come out of their lethargic stupor they are going to yet again be the Champs Of Chokes. I hear the phrase COMPLETELY USELESS BY SEPTEMBER used a lot by White Sox and Cardinal fans to describe the Chicago Cubs but sometimes I secretly have to think it myself. Just when the Cubs give me every reason to think they are for real they pull the rug out from under me so cruelly. They did it to me in '69, '84,and '03. In 2004 they were suppose to have a better team than in '03 and we all know what happened to them in September. I think every Cub fan has the right to be nervous and anxious that the Cubs are going to blow this whole thing. Until I see them with a huge lead (like 10 runs or more) in the 9th inning of the last game of the World Series and the Cub's closer gets the third out against the American League team, will I be able to breath easy and relax.

P.S. Stop it right now! He's a Cub now and he's been pretty darn good. I think it's even sweeter that he's on our side and the Cardinal fans can only watch and see him help us achieve our ultimate goal. Great move by Mr. Hendry picking Edmonds off of the scrap heap for cheap.

Ok Cubs, you start a series today at home against a Pirate team who doesn't have Jason Bay anymore. Is it just my personal opinion or do you find that when the Cubs have the bases loaded with 2 outs the guy you want batting is Mike Fontenot? I cringe when Derrek Lee comes to bat when bases are loaded and one out because sure enough he will hit into a double play. If the bases are loaded and two outs Lee will strike out. Aramis is coming around and I hope he finds his groove but he's been not so clutch since the All-Star Break. Then there is the "Littlest Cub" Mike Fontenot who had a bases clearing double to put the Cubs ahead and win todays game against the Marlins. Fontenot can also hit a homer now and then and you wonder how he does it. The two Cajun boys on the team are scrappy and I wish we had more like them on the team. Today, Mike Fontenot...you are my hero.

Marty Brennaman Can Kiss My Cubbie Blue A_ _!

APRIL 19, 2008

So Brennaman thinks that Cub fans are "OBNOXIOUS" and he won't appologize for what he said? Who the hell does he think he is? Sure there are obnoxious drunk fans at Wrigley just like there are drunk obnoxious fans in every ball park. But all Cub fans are not obnoxious and he just showed his stupidity by making a comment like that. He insulted me a die-hard Cub fan, and I truly think he should be reprimanded for what he said. I'm glad that our sports announcers have more class than to pick on the opposing team's fans. Now we all know that Marty has a personal vendetta against the Cubs because when his son was broadcasting for the Cubs they wouldn't let him work for the FOX network while working for WGN. What announcer with any class would say, you want to root against the Cubs and that they will find a way to screw up this year because they are the Cubs.

He also said the Cardinal fans are the best in baseball. Well, I'll bet old Marty has never sat in Wrigley when the Cards fans are in town because I have, and they are really, really, obnoxious. I suppose they don't act that way in Cincinnati because the Cincinnati team isn't much competition these days and are not a threat to the Red Birds.

Finally, in 1988 there was an incident involving the Reds where Pete Rose was ejected after bumping into an umpire and after he was ejected the Reds fans litered the field with stuff causing a delay, but that was ok with Brennaman because it was his team doing the litering of the field. What a two-faced jerk. I sense there is some jealousy towards the Cubs like most others who want to dis us!

GO CUBS and remember that you have the greatest fans ever!

TWISTED TESTICLE!

MARCH 10, 2008

Twisted Testicle. Isn't that the name of an 80's rock band? Well, Felix Pie has a condition known as "testicular torsion" and will be out for a couple of days to have this malady surgically repaired. I just got thru reading an article by Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune and it says that "Pie had the problem reduced manually, and was able to continue playing." That's interesting.........I wonder who was doing the manual reducing? Anyway, I guess if Felix doesn't have this surgery he could lose the testicle. The procedure involves (ok, this is where guys should stop reading)sewing the outer layer of the testicle to the scrotum wall. They say he'll only be out 3 to 5 days but OUCH! Sounds like you wouldn't want to walk let alone run after having that done. Felix has been playing pretty darn good in Spring Training with this problem so hopefully after having this corrected he'll play even better. Best of luck to you Felix on your surgery!

Stone goes to the Black side !!

Say it aint so Stoney !!!! What is all this fuss about Aramis Ramirez's love of cockfights? He's a Dominican and cockfighting is legal there. He is not doing this in America where it is illegal so why is the media trying to make this a Michael Vick thing? While I don't condone cruelty to animals, I don't think that the media should be making a big deal about this. I think Aramis was right when he told reporters that he would not let them ask him about it and that they should stick to talking about baseball.

PAT HUGHES NAMED 2007 ILLINOIS SPORTSCASTER OF THE YEAR

FEBURARY 12, 2008

What? My nephew Payton came along with me and my usual suspects this year and it was his very first Cub convention and his 8th birthday on Friday. I was lucky enough to get a Derrek Lee autograph scratch off card and Payton got a Ryne Sandberg autograph scratch off. How cool was that for an 8 year old to come to his first convention on his birthday and get a Hall of Famer's autograph on a bat!

We started out scouting for Cub souvenirs from the vendors and then it was time for the Opening Ceremonies. When we got to the Grand Ballroom they told us that there was no room and wouldn't let us in, but where there's a will there's a way and we made it in with minutes to spare. Ronnie Woo-Woo was there still campaining for Obama and was yelled at by an elderly usher and told he couldn't stand where he was standing. After getting scolded for several minutes he left but found another spot because you could hear him "Wooing" during the ceremonies. When all the Cub players and coaches came out they stood above us on the balcony and they had Cub Hats in their hands. When Payton's dad told Jim Hendry it was Payton's birthday he flipped his hat to Payton and said Happy Birthday to him. Another great birthday moment.

Later in the evening my daughter Diane and I showed Payton the art of getting autographs from the ballplayers as we waited for them in the lobby. Payton got some good ones for his first outing.

Now the highlight of my weekend was that I was able to get Ron Santo's autograph. I did stand in line longer than I want to admit, but he was and is my favorite Cub and it was worth it.

I don't want to bore everyone to death with my week-end, so I will just list a few of my feelings about some of the Cub players and management:

1. We saw Jim Hendry walking thru the concession area and asked him if he would autograph the hat he gave Payton the night before and he did it although he looked like he was on his way to do something and he was late. He is truly a really nice guy. Sorry Jim if I got a little crabby with you when some of the signings you've made thru the years didn't agree with me.

2. Soriano came late to his autograph session (I think it was about an hour) and threw off all the rest of the signings for awhile. The more I hear about Soriano the less I'm liking him as a person.

3. Payton wanted Dave Kingman's autograph and since Dave was in Kitty O'Shea's and Payton wasn't old enough to go in, I went in to get the ball autographed for him. Dave was sipping on a white wine and I hated to bother him but I was on a mission. I exused my self for imposing on him and much to my surprise he signed the ball and was very nice. I had heard some things about him when he was a player so I was a little worried!

4. I think that the convention on a whole was way too crowded and a little unorganized. The autograph lines were extremely long and you couldn't get food or look at the souvenirs without having to cut thru the lines of people. Next year have this thing at McCormick place!

5. Milt Pappas still has it in for Bruce Froemming (rightfully so) as I heard him make a comment as he was signing baseballs.

6. There was a little too much "Wooing" coming from Ronnie Wickers this year. I was totally "Woo-ed" out

ACH DU LIEBER! Now Jon Lieber is a nice guy and I loved the 2001 Jon Lieber, but the 2008 version I'm not so sure about. Lieber had surgery for a ruptured tendon in his foot last season and in 2002 he had elbow ligament surgery. I guess it could have been worse but I was really looking to see a more flashier signing along the lines of an Eric Bedard or a Brian ( I only did steroids once) Roberts. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that they didn't re-sign Steve Trachsel!!

Lieber has said that he always wanted to come back to Chicago and if he could make it happen he would. I went down to Wrigley Field this afternoon with my nephew to pay for "our" season tickets and who do we run into but Ronnie (Woo-Woo) Wickers stumping for Barack Obama. All decked out in his Cubbie attire you could hear Ronnie chanting "Obama-Woo, Obama Woo." I figure Obama is a shoe-in now that he has Oprah and Ronnie's backing. Woo-Woo said people do funny things in the voting booth...just because they say they like Obama doesn't mean they will really vote for him. I never realized he was so political! Ronnie told us he wasn't pleased that Barack was a Chicago White Sox fan but he was campaigning for him none the less and then he asked us if we were going to Spring Training. We told him no, we would not be going to Arizona this year but that we would be attending the Cubs Convention this coming weekend and that we would see him there. These are some of the names that are allegedly on the list. Among Cub and former Cub players are: Sammy Sosa (no surprise), Mark Prior (I kind of thought it), Kerry Wood (Damn, thought it but wished I was wrong), Neifi Perez (that little dude had to be on something) and Nomar Garciaparra. I'm kind of glad no current Cub player has been named on the list other than Wood, but Brian Roberts of the Orioles who the Cubs are currently pursuing has been reportedly listed. Could this be why the Cubs non-tendered Mark Prior? Will the Cubs still pursue Brian Roberts? Will Dusty Baker still have a man crush on Neifi Perez? Hang on Sports fans...I will be back with the official names when the Mitchell report comes out in about one hour from now.

UPDATE FOR THE MITCHELL REPORT:
Well, there's good new to report now that the Mitchell report has come out. Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are NOT on the list. Some of the big names to come out were Miguel Tejada who was just recently traded to our NL Central rival the Houston Astros and Eric Gagne also recently traded to a NL Central rival the Milwaukee Brewers. Fukudome reportedly signed for 4 years 48 million. The Cubs seemed to have a yen for this guy for sometime and hopefully he'll (Ja)pan out for them. He's a lefthanded hitting rightfielder and Lou Piniella has said that scouts describe Fukudome as a cross between Ichiro and Hideki Matsui. If that is true then Cub fans have something to be excited about. I wonder if they will get someone to sing the 7th inning stretch in Japanese next year? Now that we got our rightfield problem fixed what do you think will be Jim's next move? What's going to happen with Mark Prior? Do you think the Cubs have another move or two in them or are they done? All I know is I want to send out a message to Jim Hendry: Stop signing Neifi type 2nd basemen/shortstops. He does have a certain affection for lousy 2nd basemen/shortstops and seems to like to stockpile them. The hotstove season has been pretty boring so far Jimmy Boy....let's get going!

NO OWNER, NO PLAYERS??

I am guessing thats the way this is all going to work this year. TERRIBLE MOVE!!

ALRIGHT CUBS FANS, HERE WE GO!!! YES WE GOT RID OF JAQUE JONES, BUT WHY DID WE HAVE TO TRADE OUR GARBAGE FOR DETROITS GARBAGE. THIS GUY ALTHOUGH A UTILITY PLAYER IS GOD AWFUL!!!I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I AM SICK TO DEATH OF UTILITY PLAYERS AND PLATOON PLAYERS. LETS GET SOME STARS, SO WE CAN MAKE AN HONEST RUN THIS YEAR.THERE ARE FREEAGENTS OUT THERE HERE ALREADY HAVE PLAYED IN THE MAJORS, SO LETS FORGET ABOUT THESE JAPANESE GUYS WHO ALL THEY WILL BE IS ANOTHER WAY THE CUBS MAKE MORE MONEY BECAUSE OF THE JAPANESE AUDIENCE. THESE GUYS ARE NO HEDEKI MATSUI. THEY ARE HALFASS PLAYERS WHO WILL NEED TO BE PLATOONED ONCE AGAIN.SO LETS TAKE A LOOK AT GUYS THAT ARE BONIFIED STUDS THAT ARE AVALIABLE. A-ROD....YEAH HE'S EXPENSIVE, WHO THE HELL CARES. HE IS WORTH IT!JOHAN SANTANA...YEAH HE'S EXPENSIVE...SO WHAT....HE IS WORTH IT!!LETS FACE IT RAMIREZ AND DEREK LEE ARE NOT GOING TO BE STARS FOREVER, AND THEY ARE GETTING OLD, SO LETS MAKE THE BEST OF THEM BY PUTTING SOME GUYS AROUND THEM TO CARRY THE LOAD. YEAH WE GOT SORIANO LAST YEAR. THATS A GOOD START ALTHOUGH I THINK THE 136 MILLION DOLLARS WE GAVE HIM WAS WEIGHING HIM DOWN CAUSE IT SEEMS AS THOUGH HIM STEALING BASES HAS BECOME TO MUCH WORK. BAD QUAD OR HAMSTRING, FOR THAT KIND OF MONEY, YOU CAN HIRE SOME HOOKER MASSEUSE TO MASSAGE YOU IN BETWEEN INNINGS. WHATEVER IT TAKES!!DO NOT PAY CARLOS SILVA JUST BECAUSE HE IS ONE OF THE FEW PITCHERS OUT THERE. HE STILL WENT LESS THEN 500 LAST YEAR.IF WE WANTED ANOTHER SO SO PITCHER WE COULD OF KEPT MADDUX FOR 10 MILLION FROM A FEW YEARS AGO. AT LEAST YOU KNOW WHAT YOU GET FROM HIM.IF IN FACT WE DO NOT GET ONE OF THE 2 BIGGEST FREE AGENTS, OUR SEASON IS GOING TO DEPEND ONCE AGAIN ON HALFASS PLAYERS AND PLATOON GUYS IN THE OUTFIELD, AND I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I THINK WE ALL, SOME MORE THEN OTHERS BECAUSE OF AGE, TO SEE A WINNING CHICAGO TEAM THAT DOESNT GIVE YOU ULCERS AND ACID REFLUX ALL SEASON!FOR ONCE , LETS BE THE YANKEES, YOU ALWAYS KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO BE AT THE END OF THE YEAR, ALWAYS HAVING A CHANCE!! TIME WILL TELL, LETS GO HENDRY, MR KNOW IT ALL. I THINK THE CUBS SHOULD HAVE A WEBSITE WHERE THE FANS CAN VOTE ON WHAT FREE AGENTS ARE AQUIRED WHICH YEAR, AND THATS WHO HENDRY SHOULD GO AFTER. AT LEAST YOU CANT SAY WHAT IF??

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://99cubyears.blogspot.com/2007/11/infante-terrible-move.html' title='INFANTE!! He was traded for Omar Infante a 26 year old utility infielder who was once a top prospect for the Detroit Tigers. I personally am glad Jones is gone but I'm not impressed with Infante. With Jones gone does this open center field for Felix Pie or will the Cubs still try to get a center fielder? Does this move pave the way for the Cubs to acquire Kosuke Fukudome? The Cubs have also been rumoured to have interest in Mike Cameron although he comes with a 25 game suspension for testing positive for using a banned substance. What do you think Cub fans? Do you like this move? Who would you want realistically for the Cubs to get this off season? Discuss............

WAITING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION CUBS FAN

As I sit here waiting for my first grandchild to be born anyday now I'm filled with excitement. I am also filled with excitement anticipating what moves the Chicago Cubs will/can make this winter to improve the team. We all know it will be 100 years since the Cubs won a World Series and wouldn't it be nice if they can really pull this thing together with a few tweaks here and there and end this long and agonizing losing streak. Wouldn't it be nice if they were to win it all in 2008 and my grandson would grow up knowing a different kind of Cubs team. A Cubs team that none of us have ever known....a World Series Champion Cubs Team. There is no question that baby Jake will be raised a Cubs fan. Cubbie-blue blood will run through his veins. Is 2008 going to be the Year Of The Cub? I don't know if it will be, but like every Cub fan and maybe even Mr. Negativity himself although he will never admit it, I always have hope every spring that this will be the year. But especially next year because of Jake I want it even more. How great will it be after 100 years? I can't even imagine it but I can dream can't I?

Donald Trump

Does anyone think Donald Trump would be a good Cubs owner!!?? I am a 3rd generation Cubs fan and I'm in my 50's and time is running out. I just want to see a Chicago Cubs World Series Championship in my lifetime....is that asking too much? When teams like the Florida Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks can get to the World Series and win (Marlins won twice) it makes my blood boil. Now the Cubs have this business of being sold to mess things up. That makes me nervous. They say it should be business as usual but will it? Also I'm hearing that Hendry wants Kaz Matsui.....what the heck do we need him for? He's a Japanese Neifi. Is this negative enough for you Mr. Negativity?

Wecome To The Cubs Blog for the NEGATIVE PEOPLE !

Well , This will save us time and money from Cubs Fans calling and Griping about the things they do and don't do !!
